Tanti nomi. Tante persone.

Feet firmly on the ground, eyes on the future

The season-opening press conference held today at the Casetta Gialla began with an address by President Vicky Mantegazza, who first outlined a number of changes within the club’s organization. State Councilor Fabio Regazzi took on the role of Vice President of the Board of Directors of HCL SA several months ago. This decision was made with a view to the club’s long-term planning, in recognition of its entrepreneurial and political skills and its extensive network of contacts. Another prominent figure has been a member of the Board of Directors for over a year: Massimo Pedrazzini, whose other positions include Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fidinam Group and President of the HC Lugano Academy Foundation, which has supported the HCL youth sector since 2015. Gabriele Zanzi will be proposed to the General Assembly of members on 6 October as the new President of the Hockey Club Lugano association. Working alongside him in the management of the organization responsible for the Bianconeri youth section are entrepreneur Andrea Gehri, Mario Mantegazza and Emilio Martinenghi, a well-known figure in Ticino and member of the Board of the HC Lugano Academy Foundation. Anna Mantegazza will also soon join the Foundation. Many names. Many people. All united by their professional qualities but, above all, by their Bianconeri hearts.

Vicky Mantegazza described herself as a person who keeps both feet firmly on the ground, but who likes to dream every morning. For several years now, Hockey Club Lugano’s sporting budget has been positioned around the middle of the National League budget. Results and league standings, however, are not automatically determined by budgets. And with the high quality of the current coaching staff, if the team can maintain the team spirit that characterized it last season, it can make its mark even against opponents with greater financial resources. Among the President’s most concrete and immediate dreams is a solution by the City to an urgent issue concerning the operational heart of the arena: the first team’s dressing room, built in 1995 and now no longer adequate for the activities carried out there. Dialogue with the city authorities is ongoing and the club is awaiting the green light from the City Executive.

CEO Marco Werder first highlighted the extraordinary moment currently being experienced by Swiss ice hockey, reflected in an average arena occupancy rate in the National League of close to 90%, record TV visibility exceeding 15 million viewers and the Swiss national team’s first place in the IIHF World Ranking.

Deeply rooted in the region, ice hockey in Switzerland succeeds in bringing together different regions, generations and linguistic communities. For this growth to remain sustainable in the future, however, three major challenges must be addressed: the excessive increase in the salaries of Swiss players, better support for talents between the ages of 18 and 23, and the need to increase the number of covered ice rinks, which remains significantly lower than in the major ice hockey nations around the world. On this latter point, HCL is convinced that it can provide a concrete response through the new CMFG Arena in Sigirino. This state-of-the-art multi-sport centre represents much more than an ice surface. It is an investment in younger generations that opens previously unknown prospects for recruitment, training and development. A project made possible by the vision and entrepreneurial courage of Gianni Ochsner and the financial contribution of the City of Lugano for the ice time rental. Hockey Club Lugano therefore intends to invest even more in its Hockey School, strengthen cooperation between sport and education, and create an increasingly credible pathway towards the first team. The fact that ten players developed through the club’s youth system – Brian Zanetti, Harijs Cjunskis, Enea Togni, Alessio Bertaggia, Marco Zanetti, Lorenzo Canonica, Luca Fazzini, Giovanni Morini, Cyrill Henry and Dario Simion – are now part of the first team demonstrates that, in Lugano ice hockey, this pathway can turn a dream into reality. It is probably the most sustainable response to an increasingly expensive market: develop, support and trust our own talents.

Last season, Hockey Club Lugano welcomed almost 400 more spectators per game on average. The club intends to continue along this path by reaching out to neighborhoods and schools. One week before the first championship game, HCL would like to thank its 4,018 season-ticket holders for their loyalty, with a slight increase compared with the figure from last season.

General Manager Janick Steinmann highlighted the renewed confidence in and credibility of Hockey Club Lugano following last season’s positive campaign. The medium-term objective is to establish the club as a solid and strong organization. On a day-to-day basis, the team will have the opportunity to start its morning training sessions a little later and to train for longer. This change will facilitate recovery after long road trips and improve the quality of preparation.

The first weeks of the season have been confirmed that the additions to the foreign-player contingent have increased the team’s offensive potential. However, the balance in the National League is becoming increasingly pronounced: every opponent deserves respect, and it is therefore essential to remain humble. The sporting objective outlined by Steinmann today is qualification for the playoffs, together with continuing the development process that began last season.

A topic particularly close to the Bianconeri GM’s heart is a stronger connection between the first team and the youth sector, based on a clearly defined top-down philosophy. The two areas will move even closer together, for example through the regular presence of first-team coaching staff at youth-team training sessions and through an ongoing exchange of information between the respective coaching staff.
